Gift Card Scam Could Cost You Big

It's a scam using gift cards that could cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Police are trying to track down two suspects involved in the scam who were caught on tape.

"They bought everything from diapers to beer to gas," said scam victim Steven Bergenholtz.

The thieves were using Bergenholtz's credit card number to make those buys.

"I was upset. I was upset that someone had stolen my credit card number, applied it to a gift card and were using it around San Antonio," explained Steven Bergenholtz.

The thieves stopped at a Walgreen's first and then went to a CITGO for gas, charging up nearly $400 in just one day.

So how does the scam work? The thieves take VISA and MasterCard gift cards and, using a label maker, put stolen credit card info on the back of the gift cards. Then they go shopping. Since they're using gift cards, they are not required to show any identification. Store clerks unknowningly type in the number, and the sale goes through.

"I noticed in a very short period of time, these charges were popping up there, in San Antonio, and I happened to be out of town," Bergenholtz told News 4.
Police said they are seeing more cases like this around San Antonio.

(CBS 5) Sterling Guinn had a $100 Wal-Mart Visa gift card, but when he went to use it he found out, "this $100 card with five dollars tax was now worth less than $10," said Sterling.

For two weeks Sterling couldn't get Wal-Mart to find out where the money went and every time he would check his balance he says, "They would debit another dollar from the credit card so it was just going down in value."

That's right, the card states there's a charge every time you check the balance.

"There are a lot of junk fees that can quickly whittle down the amount that you have loaded onto these cards," says Joe Ridout with consumer action.

He says Visa gift cards really aren't a credit card at all.

"It's not like a credit card where you are borrowing money from your bank and then paying them back, This is a case where your own money is being loaded onto the plastic and no credit is issued," says Ridout.

Wal-Mart visa fixed the problem by restoring the balance.

Here's what to find out before buying a visa gift card:
-See if they charge to check the balance.
-Check for monthly service charges.
-Do they charge you if it is lost or stolen.
-Does the card expire.

In Sterlings case Wal-Mart Visa card charges $5 if his card expires before he uses it.

"If I buy a card and it's worth $100 and you tell me it's worth $100 it should stay a $100 until I use it. There shouldn't be a surcharge just to have it in your hands," says Sterling.
